TGIF, Tokyo and Yokohama
En fantastisk fredag i Tokyo! (Nötter från CT.)
INTRODUCTION
Started with a late Champagne breakfast at the hotel, moved on to a marvellous lunch at La Rochelle Aoyama, continued at home with dinner and Netflix.
FLIGHT 1 - CHAMPAGNE BREAKFAST
…and in all honesty, I enjoyed the ensuing btl of Cola Zero more…
N.V. Jacques Defrance Champagne Tradition Brut France, Champagne, 87 points
Bread on the nose.
Creamy texture with sharp acidity that derails this bottling to some degree. Still pleasing for what it is.
FLIGHT 2 - LUNCH AT LA ROCHELLE, AOYAMA (TOKYO)
Their lunch grand menu that just didn’t cut it. This is simply because Mr Chef has spoiled us over the years, and he obviously didn't put his hands on this lunch.
Note to self: only dinners here!
2018 Marc Humbrecht Riesling Alice France,
86 points
One glass for lunch at La Rochelle, Aoyama (Tokyo).
Beautiful pale yellow colour.
Nose is mega riesling without diesel.
In the mouth this is smooth with slightly lower acids than expected and drinking superbly well with the fish plate.
2007 Le Macchiole Scrio Toscana IGT Italy, Toscana IGT, 93 points
Enjoyed at lunch mtg at La Rochelle, Aoyama (Tokyo).
This is pure, polished, mega intense and not really what we're looking for in Syrah.
Still very young and tight. May very well scream PICKABOO in some 10 years' time or so.
At this price range, we most certainly prefer our Syrah from La Chapelle for Europe and so many of the luxurious labels from Downunder.
FLIGHT 3 - HOME DINNER
Korean pork, kimchi and rice with pork soup.
Would only do justice to beer, so the wine was suffering a little. Nevertheless, the wine shone brightly, like a rockstar.
1995 Bodegas Alejandro Fernández Ribera del Duero Tinto Pesquera Spain, Castilla y León, Ribera del Duero, 92 points
Auction bargain with LSF.
Arrived tonight.
….lo and behold! The cork was in the wine and there was substantial leakage.
So, emergency Caesarean!
Gratefully enough, this was a superb bottle of wine. Odin must have been watching over this bottle. So I sacrificed an extra glass for Thor and Wotam.
As tonight's dinner was Korean kimchi pork with rice and pork soup, the wine didn't make for a happy marriage.
Me: Dark red with slight bricking. From its journey: misty.
Hana: broad, muscular and very promising.
Kuchi: this is like a fabulous kiss with someone you really love. Velvet in a glas. Long, beautiful with dark and mature fruit. Intense and simply a lovely bottle of wine.
Not spoiled.
Norse Gods are good!
FLIGHT 4 - NETFLIX
This is the Paul stage…
2019 Domaine Masson-Blondelet Pouilly-Fumé Les Angelots, Loire Valley, Pouilly-Fumé, 91 points
What a beautiful PF!
91 for now with a tremendous upside in a few years' time.
Everything is in the right place.:
Acidity M+, intensity M++, aromatics, purity, minerality, length and circumvention.
Cold clime Sb with lots of sun, fatty minerality, kiwi, gooseberries, hay, rolling in the grass, etc but also has a woffing dollop of the "yellow fruits" of Chenin blanc. Has a clean entry and exit, making it feel short. However, I guess it's simply a sign that some years of rest will coax more out of this wine than we did tonight.
A lovely, excruciatingly delicious PF.
CLOSING
Sleep will be extremely peaceful!
