Upon plop, 82 p. (Closer to good than very good.)
But it grew surprisingly well with some air!
The tannic backbone put in the next gear, aiding the fruit in making this quite interesting. Doesn't tell you Minervois in any way and is quite a Monday wine from the "bonus btl lot boxes".
More tomorrow!
Tomorrow came:
The wine has grown a whole lot and is now good enough for a weekday dinner in this house. Perfectly balanced, some seriously grained tannins over voluptuous fruit and mature aromas. Detecting a tidbit of soap, but nothing to worry about. Now, the story is more correct: This wine speaks of sunshine and heat. Yumm!
Minervois is stapled to my heart!
1976 Château Mercian Premier, 93p
90 points upon plop.
Robe: a beautiful mature Bdx of yore.
Nose: terribly oxidised.
Palate: this is lean, intense and with deep fruit standing strong. Just like a better Bdx chateau from a lesser year.
Slow-oxed under cork for 24 hrs:
My goodness!
Completely a different wine compared to yesterday.:
Aromas of lettuce, cucumber, watercress and Loiresque CF with oxidization almost completely blown off.
In the mouth: Woah! This is a very very very good wine. Towards lean and acidic with a beautiful intensity. Distinctly CF in the lingering finish.
My blind guess for day 2's showing would certainly have been Loiresque CF from the days of yore.
