Château Margaux to Drink and Cellar
THE BEST IN LIFE
Perhaps it is the impeccable architecture of the Château itself, or the invariable class and classicism of Château Margaux, the wine, that brings to mind Ernest Hemingway, that great ambassador of
joie de vivre, who wrote: "Wine is one of the most civilized things in the world and one of the most natural things in the world that has been brought to the greatest perfection..."
I like to think of a young Hemingway in Paris in the 1920s, with the other great literary expatriates, enjoying Margaux 1899 or 1900, moved to write those words. Margaux has that kind of power to move people. One of Ernest's granddaughters was named for the wine, after all.
CLASSIC WINEMAKING
The property at Château Margaux has an august reputation reaching back to the 18th century, but its modern golden era has been under the careful direction of Corinne Mentzelopoulos whose family has owned and run the estate since 1977. The wines are unmistakably First Growth, eternal and leave a mark on your memory. In the glass they combine a magical elegant aroma with exquisite purity distinct to the Château.
Along with her general manager Paul Pontallier, Mentzelopoulos has consistently pushed the standards of excellence at the Château even higher, producing since the early 1980's amongst the greatest Margaux ever. The Château produces an exceptional white wine, Pavillon Blanc, made solely with Sauvignon Blanc, as well as a top-notch second wine, Pavillon Rouge.
